I just LOVE this two. The nicest, friendliest, most decent people you will get. The kind of people that you REALLY want to do something special for. The kind of people that you will stay friends with forever. Kevin and Zelda de Bruijn.
They got married at the beautiful Green Leaves Country Lodge & Venue near Hartbeespoortdam. Every time I come here to photograph a wedding I like the venue more and more.
I asked Zelda a couple of questions about her wedding day!
How did you meet?
We met in 2009 when both our action netbal teams played against one another. (Yes, guys play action netbal too!) Both our teams where short players so after the game we exchanged numbers and said we can help each other out in future games.
After a few months, we dated for 2 weeks. We then broke up amicable and became best friends there after. Although we dated other people we still had a special connection and everyone saw what we failed to realize at first, it was meant to be. In Jan 2012 (which was leap year too), I decided to make our relationship official. I had cut out hearts and placed them in a heart shape on the ground and ask him to be my boyfriend. In Dec of that year he asked me to marry him.
Tell us about the proposal
This took careful planning (aka : manipulation) on Kevin’s part with the help of my mother. He had a daunting task as he new I wanted the proposal to be a surprise and not to see it coming. To make it worse, heights and restaurants were out of the question and timing was important because I work 7 days a week.
On Friday 14 Dec 2012, we were meeting Kevin’s Dad and Sonye for dinner at Montecasino. They were running late (very unlike them) so Kevin decided to order champagne. This was very strange and I asked if he knew something I didn’t. He took my hand and said “you know I love you” (my heart beating faster and faster) and pulled a black box out of his jacket pocket. At that moment I was thinking “yes, but not like this”. He opened the box and inside was a heart shaped locket. Not very amused, I gave a quick sigh of relief and said it’s not funny.
After dinner he took me home. As we walked through the door my mom kept me occupied with lots of questions while Kevin was putting my stuff in my room. After a few seconds, Kevin called for me and as I approached my room, the door was slightly open and the light was off. I thought it was strange but didn’t think anything of it so I pushed the door open and switched the light on. And there he was, on one knee with the ring in one hand and strawberries in the other asking me to marry him. The mock proposal worked as I definitely did not see it happening the same night! So he was forgiven 😉
Describe your wedding day, anything specific that you will always remember + Highlight of the wedding
I was surprisingly calm the whole day right up to the moment where my mom and I started walking down the isle. I had tears of joy streaming down my face. I will never forget Kevin’s face looking at me with such love and joy. I will cherish that moment forever. The food was excellent and the Dj kept everyone in a party mood. The whole day was perfect, everyone looked beautiful and I wouldn’t have changed a thing (maybe eating more wedding cake – it was awesome!!).
The dress
I am quite a conservative person who likes a bit of fun and found the perfect dress at Olivelli. Yes, when I put the dress on, I just knew it was the one! It reflected my personality and captured the essence of the our wedding – classic, elegant with a bit of sparkle.
The Flowers
The flowers were perfect, with soft colours setting a romantic mood, they reflected our theme to the tee. Claire and Lee (from Fields of Colour) where both fun and professional and knew exactly what I wanted and did a fantastic job!
 Was there any drama
Drama? what drama?
 The Honeymoon
Kevin kept the honeymoon a secret and said we are going to a place where they would teach me how to be a proper wife! Haha. While having dinner on our wedding day he finally revealed that we were going to Thailand!
Awesome!!
 Tell us about your photographer.
For some photographers there are NO words! 😉 They are amazing at what they do and JC Crafford is one of them! He makes you feel at ease even when you are camera shy and he captures the most precious moments.
Choosing a photographer is so important, because your wedding photos are the only things that you have left of your special day capturing memories from the beginning to the end. We definitely chose well!!!
